Wardrobes in Bookham
Bookham sits only a few miles from our Dorking showroom and workshop, so it’s one of the places we work most often. Whether you’re in the older cottages near St Nicolas Church and the village centre, one of the interwar and post-war family homes along the roads towards Bookham Common, or a newer house on the edge of the village, we know the kind of rooms you’re likely to be working with.
That variety is exactly why a made-to-measure approach works so well here. A bungalow or chalet-style home may have bedrooms with sloping ceilings under the roof. A 1930s detached house often has a bay window and a chimney breast competing for the wall space. A family home that has been extended may have a new bedroom with very different proportions to the original ones. Standard-size furniture rarely suits any of them.
We design every wardrobe around your room and the way you use it, build it in our own workshop and fit it with our own team. You can see the door styles and finishes for yourself at our Dorking showroom, which is an easy drive from Bookham with free parking on site.

Our services
Every wardrobe and piece of furniture we fit in Bookham is designed with you, made in our workshop and installed by our own team.
Fitted Wardrobes
Many Bookham family homes have generous bedrooms where a run of fitted wardrobes can take the whole wall, from floor to ceiling. Built in properly, a fitted wardrobe leaves no gap above for clutter and no awkward space at the sides, and it makes a bedroom look calmer and more finished. We build either as a front frame, using your walls and ceiling for the most storage, or as a full carcass with its own sides and back, then plan the interior around what you need to store. Sliding or hinged doors, mirror or panel, the choice of finish is almost unlimited, so the wardrobe can suit a traditional cottage or a modern extension equally well.
Sliding Wardrobes
Where bedrooms are smaller, or the bed has to sit close to the wardrobe, sliding doors make far better use of the space than hinged ones because they need no room to swing open. That’s often the case in Bookham’s bungalows and in the second and third bedrooms of family homes. Mirrored sliding doors also help a smaller room feel lighter and larger. We offer two door systems: the slim, rounded Lazuryt frame and the bolder Shaker style, with mirror, coloured glass and panel finishes. Both are on display in our showroom, and every sliding door we fit carries a 10-year warranty on its movement.
Made-to-Measure Wardrobes
Bookham has plenty of homes with rooms in the roof, from chalet-style bungalows to loft conversions in family houses, and those sloping ceilings are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most. We measure every angle and build the wardrobe to follow the slope, using infill panels to meet the ceiling and shortening or angling doors so they sit neatly beneath it. The same approach works for alcoves either side of a chimney breast, which are almost never the same width, and for older cottage rooms where the walls aren’t quite straight. You’ll see your design as hand-drawn plans or CGI images before anything is made.
Walk-In Wardrobes
A walk-in wardrobe is more achievable than many people think. In Bookham we’ve seen spare bedrooms turned into dressing rooms once the children have moved out, and larger main bedrooms with part of the room screened off as a walk-in area. Even a corner or alcove can become a compact walk-in closet. Inside, every rail, drawer and shelf is planned around your clothes, with features such as pull-down hanging rails, trouser racks, tie and belt racks, wire baskets and shoe storage. Close it off with sliding doors for privacy, or leave it open for a lighter, boutique feel.
Hinged Wardrobes
If your home has a more traditional character, hinged doors can suit it beautifully. Framed and panelled styles sit naturally in Bookham’s older cottages and period homes, while flat doors in Super Matt or High Gloss give an extension or modern bedroom a clean finish. Our Aspire range offers over 50 styles in almost 60 colours, made to measure up to 2.5m tall, with soft-close hinges as standard. Hinged doors need space to open, so we’ll always check the room first and suggest sliding doors or a mix if that works better.
Bedroom Furniture
Many of our Bookham customers ask us to make the rest of the bedroom too, so everything is designed together. We make dressing tables, chests of drawers, bedside cabinets, headboards and shelving to your exact measurements, finished to match or complement your wardrobe doors. Drawers run on full-extension runners with soft-close options. Because everything comes from our workshop, a chest of drawers can sit perfectly in an alcove or a dressing table can be built into a wardrobe run, rather than standing awkwardly in front of it.
Many Bookham commuters now work from home part of the week. We can design fitted desks, shelving and storage to turn a spare room or alcove into a proper workspace.
The space under the stairs in a family home can hold coats, shoes, sports kit and the vacuum cleaner. We build drawers, cupboards and shelves to fit the slope exactly.
Local advice
A new wardrobe is often the start of a bigger bedroom update, and doing things in the right order saves time and money. This is the approach we suggest to Bookham homeowners.
1
Before thinking about doors or colours, take stock of what the wardrobe has to hold. How much long hanging do you need for coats and dresses? How many shirts, jumpers and pairs of shoes? Is there luggage or bedding that needs a home? This shapes the whole design, and it’s the best way to make sure your new wardrobe gives you more usable storage, not just a new look.
2
The best place for a wardrobe isn’t always where the old one stood. Think about where the bed, windows, radiators and sockets are, and which wall will give you the most uninterrupted height and width. We’ll help you weigh this up at your home survey.
3
Once the position is set, the space in front of the wardrobe usually decides between sliding and hinged doors. Sliding doors need no clearance, while hinged doors give full access to the interior.
4
Choose your finishes once the layout is settled, and think about the room as a whole: flooring, walls and any furniture you’re keeping. Seeing samples in person at our showroom makes this much easier.
Local homes
Sloping ceilings in bungalows and loft rooms: rooms in the roof need storage built to follow the slope.
Bay windows and chimney breasts: in many 1930s homes, these leave only awkward lengths of wall for a wardrobe.
Extensions with different proportions: new bedrooms that don’t match the rest of the house.
Smaller second and third bedrooms: too tight for hinged doors to open comfortably.
Older cottages near the village centre: walls and floors that are rarely square.
Dated built-in wardrobes: older fitted wardrobes with sound carcasses but tired doors that can simply be replaced.

It mostly depends on the space in front of the wardrobe. Sliding doors need no clearance to open, so they suit smaller rooms, while hinged doors give full access to the interior and suit larger, more traditional rooms. We’ll recommend the best option at your survey.
