The owner of this large detached house in West Byfleet has a collection of designer handbags and shoes they wanted to enjoy every day, not hide away in boxes. At the same time, they didn’t want the rest of their clothes on show. The brief was a wardrobe that would display the bags and shoes like a boutique, while keeping everyday clothing out of sight.
We designed a four-door hinged wardrobe using our Balmoral doors with grey tinted toughened glass panels, framed in Super Matt Cashmere and finished with slim black D handles.
The two outer units are display cabinets. Lit shelving runs from top to bottom, with bags on one side and shoes on the other, so each piece is shown off through the tinted glass. In the central section, behind the two middle doors, are hanging space and a bank of drawers. Here the lighting is triggered by movement, switching on as the doors open, so the clothes stay hidden in the dark when the doors are closed.
The tinted glass is what makes it work. With the side lights on, the bags and shoes glow behind the glass while the centre stays dark. With all the lights off, the end panels go dark too, and the whole wardrobe reads as four matching smoked-glass doors. The Dust Grey interior keeps everything subtle and lets the collection take centre stage.
A wardrobe that doubles as a display piece. The customer can see and choose from their collection at a glance, their clothes stay discreetly hidden, and the lighting gives the bedroom a boutique feel at the flick of a switch.
It’s a good example of how far a hinged wardrobe can go beyond simple storage. Glass doors, lighting and a carefully planned interior turned a bedroom wardrobe into a feature the customer enjoys every time they walk into the room.
