This Dorking customer had just completed a loft extension, giving them a lovely new bedroom under the roof. Like most loft rooms, it has a sloping ceiling, and the low space where the roof meets the floor was going to waste. It was too low for a wardrobe, but too useful to leave empty.
The customer didn’t need more hanging space. What they wanted was somewhere to put everything else: spare bedding, suitcases, seasonal items and the boxes that otherwise end up stacked in a corner.
We created two cubby-style cupboards set into the low wall beneath the slope, designed purely for storage rather than clothing. Each one was measured and built to fit its opening exactly, so the cupboards sit flush with the wall and follow the shape of the room.
Inside, the cupboards are lined in a near match Matt Taupe Grey, giving deep, open storage space with room for bulky items. Outside, the customer chose our Ascot single panel vinyl doors in Super Matt Taupe Grey, a warm, understated colour that blends softly with the walls. Monmouth knobs in American bronze add a classic finishing touch.
Because the cupboards are built into the structure rather than standing in front of it, they take up no floor space at all. The rest of the room stays open, with plenty of space for a bed, a mirror and other furniture.
Two neat, practical cupboards that make the most of the trickiest part of a loft room. The space under the eaves now holds everything that used to clutter the bedroom, and the finished doors look as though they were always part of the conversion.
If you’re planning a loft conversion, it’s worth thinking about storage early. Building cupboards into the eaves while the room is being finished is one of the simplest ways to make a new loft bedroom work as well as it looks.
