Shaker Sliding Wardrobe for a High-Ceilinged Period Cottage in Rusper

The Brief

This 18th-century cottage near Rusper has something many period homes don’t: bedroom ceilings close to three metres high. It’s a lovely feature, but it creates a problem for storage. A standard-height wardrobe would have stopped well short of the ceiling, leaving a wide band of empty wall above it that’s hard to reach and easy to fill with clutter.

The owners wanted a sliding wardrobe for their everyday clothes that made proper use of the full height of the room, and that looked at home in a characterful old house.

Our Solution

We built the sliding wardrobe between a finished end panel on the left and a wall box on the right, then carried the storage all the way up to the ceiling with a row of four hinged top boxes. These are ideal for the things you only need now and then, such as winter bedding, suitcases and out-of-season clothes, while the space below stays clear for everyday use.

Inside, four short hanging rails give plenty of room for shirts, jackets and trousers, with a shelf above for folded items and everyday essentials.

For the doors, the customer chose our Shaker style with Dove Grey frames and panels divided into equal quarters. The grid of horizontal bars suits the proportions of a period room, and the soft grey keeps the bedroom feeling light beside the window.

The Result

A wardrobe that runs from floor to ceiling, with everyday clothes within easy reach and seasonal items tucked neatly above. Nothing in the room is wasted, and the finished storage looks as though it has always been part of the cottage.

It’s a good example of why we measure every room ourselves. High ceilings, uneven walls and tight corners are common in older Surrey and Sussex homes, and building to the exact height of the room is what turns awkward space into useful storage.
