This new build semi-detached house in Bookham has a bedroom in the roof space, with the ceiling sloping down on one side. The owners wanted a sliding wardrobe across the wall, but the slope made that tricky. Full-height rectangular sliding doors couldn’t run all the way from wall to wall, because the ceiling drops too low at one end for the doors to fit.
The easy answer would have been to stop the wardrobe short and leave the space under the slope empty. We wanted to put that space to work too.
We built the sliding wardrobe across the full-height part of the wall, between a wall box on the left and an end panel on the right, and then filled the space beneath the slope with a matching four-drawer chest. Finished in Light Grey with silver bow handles, it uses the lower part of the room that a wardrobe couldn’t reach, and gives the owners handy storage for folded clothes.
The doors are from our slim Lazuryt range, with anodised natural silver frames. A full mirror on the right brightens the loft room and doubles as a dressing mirror, while a Light Grey MFC panel on the left matches the interior.
Inside, the Light Grey carcass has two short hanging rails and one long rail, a six-shelf tower for folded items and accessories, and overhead storage for things used less often.
Every part of an awkward loft wall is now useful storage. The wardrobe, drawers and finishes all work together, so the room feels planned rather than squeezed, and the sloping ceiling has become a feature instead of a problem.
Rooms in the roof are increasingly common in new build homes around Bookham and across Surrey, and they rarely suit off-the-shelf furniture. Planning the wardrobe and drawers together, at the survey, is what lets us use every part of the space.
